Academy of Math and Academy of Reading

St. Mark's will be offering the Academy of Reading Program again this year. AOR is a highly interactive software reading program being utilized in over 4,000 schools around the country.
The Academy of Reading program is designed to assist at-risk readers, reading delayed or dyslexic students, as well as young learners in developing and improving reading acquistion skills. The Academy program is designed to complement your existing reading curriculum and can be formatted to challenge students who are easily distracted and above average in an existing reading curricula.
This year we will concentrate on working with Kindergarten-grade 3, selecting students who exhibit a need for extra help. It is our goal to have all students attain the reading skills necessary to succeed in reading by grade 3. This is a national goal for all schools. Teachers may recommend students who are in the upper grades or parents may request placement in the program.
For Academy of Reading to be effective we suggest that the student attend sessions a minimum of 3 times a week; master skills at suggested criteria levels; wear headphones at all times; and review skills they were unable to master orginally at suggested criteria levels. The teacher will review the results at least 2 times a week and report to the classroom teacher if significant problems are encountered.
