Virtue of the Month - May

Modesty

Modesty encourages us to treat others with respect and dignity.

It is a challenge in today's world to be modest in thought, word and action. We are surrounded by temptations to listen to immodest words and ideas in music lyrics, to see immodest images on television, in magazines or on the Internet, or to act in a way that is inappropriate. Pray constantly to the Holy Spirit for strength to avoid these temptations.

Each time we receive the Holy Eucharist, we become a living tabernacle. Consider that carefully when making choices.

Use this easy guide todecide if something will help you grow in modesty: Simpy ask, "Is this something I would think, do, or say in the presence of Jesus?"

"Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God." Mt. 5:8

Here is part of a Prayer for Humility by St. Frances Cabrini. If we have humlity, the we will have modesty.

"Grant that I may be free from unholy desires, and that, for your love, I remain obscure and unknown in this world, to be known only to you."

Modesty is one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Modesty recognizes the gifts we have and those of others.

"He has told you what is good and what the Lord requires of you: only to do justice and to love virtue and to walk modestly with your God."  Micah 6:8

Modesty and purity are like partners. Both of these virtues will help us live the virtue of chastity.

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you...For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in you body." 1 Cor. 6:19-20

Modesty is about self-respect and humlity. It is for boys and girls equally and is about realizing your body's value.

Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. CCC 2521

Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships. CCC 2521

Let us always remember God's Infinite Mercy. Never be afraid to ask for the graces to overcome temptation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

"You formed by inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb. I praise you, so wonderfully you made me; wonderful are your works!" Ps 139:13-14

St. Maria Goretti gives us a great example of the virtue of modesty. Her desire to remain pure led her to accept death rather than commit a sin. Take some time to read her story.

St. Maria Goretti, from your place in Heaen, pray that  I may always be modest and holy. Amen.
