ST. MARK SCHOOL LIBRARY POLICY
Hours of Operation
8:00 am – 3:30 pm closed 11:35-12:20
Circulation Period
- Library materials may be checked out for a period of one week.
- Students in 1-5 may check out only one book at a time.
- Junior High students may check out two books.
- Kindergarten students will be allowed to check out books starting second semester.
- Materials may be renewed for an additional week. This can only be done by bringing the book into the library. No verbal or phone renewal requests will be given.
- If a student is absent on the scheduled library day for their class their book will be automatically renewed for an additional week.
- Materials can be returned on the students’ scheduled library day, before school in box provided, or after school.
Overdue Materials
- Students with overdue materials will be assessed a fine of twenty -five cents per day.
- No fines will accrue for weekends or days school is not in session.
- After two weeks the book will be considered lost and an invoice will be sent home with two settlement options:
Return book and pay resulting fine plus $2.00 processing fee.
- Pay replacement cost of book plus $2.00 processing fee.
- Fines will continue to be assessed until materials are returned or replacement cost paid.
- No books will be accepted as replacement for lost materials.
- If a book that has been paid for is found within one week of payment the payment amount will be returned to the student.
Outstanding Fines or Fees
Unpaid fines or fees will result in one or more of the following actions.
- Student will not be allowed to check out any materials until paid.
- Student’s report card will be held.
- Student’s transcripts will not be released.
- Unpaid fines will be added to the tuition the following school year.
Donations
The library will accept donations of books and other materials but reserves the right not to add them to the collection. The librarian will make the decision whether to add the materials or not to the library collection. Books donated and not used will be placed in the used book sale.
Additions to Library policy effective Feb. 1, 2008
Overdue Fines: Borrowing privileges for any student with fines totaling $5.00 or more will be revoked until fines are paid in full.
Damaged Books: Students returning books to the library that have been damaged will be charged:
- $2.00 charge if book is repairable
- The replacement cost of the book plus $2.00 processing fee
- No replacement books will be accepted.

This guide has been prepared by the librarian at St. Mark School. It lists suggested Reference Books and Websites to assist K – 8 students in their research of saints, patron saints, or to help them choose a confirmation name.
BOOKS ON SAINTS
Located in Reference section or on shelf in the 200’s.
Title: Butler’s Lives of the Saints 4 volumes.
Authors: Thurston, Herbert J. & Attwater, Donald
Publisher: Christian Classics Date: 1990
Four volume set contains about 2,565 entries. Each volume lists the saints for each day of the month and provides a short biography of each one.
Title: Lives of the Saints
Author: McBrien, Richard P.
Publisher: Harper Collins Date: 2001
Over six hundred brief biographical portraits of the saints arranged according to the church calendar. Tables of feast days and patron saints listed by places, groups and causes.
Title: Lives of Saints
Author: Vann, Fr. Joseph
Publisher: John J. Crawley & Co. Date: 1954
Selected biographies of saints with excerpts from their writings. There are also several illustrations of paintings with a brief description of the saint depicted and the artist’s name.
Title: The Lives of the Saints for Everyday of the Year 4 volumes.
Publisher: The Catholic Press, Inc. Date: 1961
Similar in format to Butler’s Lives of the Saints, this set is heavily illustrated with paintings and photographs.
Title: Oxford Dictionary of Saints
Author: Farmer, David H.
Publisher: Oxford Press Date: 2003
Fully updated and revised with over 100 new saints. The fifth edition features concise accounts of the lives, cults, and artistic associations of over 1,400 saints, from the famous to the obscure. This edition includes a new appendix on pilgrimage sights in Europe.

This work is divided into two parts. The first is a listing of saints' names in alphabetical order with a short biography. The second is a calendar of saints listing their feast dates in chronological order. There is an appendix that includes lists of patron saints for occupations.

The school library has an extensive collection of individual saints’ biographies and collections of biographies. Ask your school or public librarian for help finding a specific biography.
